Plants to use
The garden is full of suitable plants, from evergreen leaves to winter berries
and flowers. If you don't have any flowers growing in the garden, treat
yourself to roses and chrysanthemums from your local florist.
Foliage
The main material used for wreaths is evergreen foliage. There are many
different types and silver and gold variegated forms can add that extra
seasonal flourish. Try a combination of two or three variegated forms of
holly or ivy for example - but be careful not to throw in too many as this
will look messy.
Making Christmas flowers with two-colored Duplex crepe paper. Petals, lovingly
cut and shaped from a pattern, were curled over the scissors’ blade,
gathered together and placed on paper covered, wire stems. Beautiful colors
light pink on one side, brilliant pink on the other, moss green on one side,
leaf green on the other, radiated from the bouquets of roses, tulips and
anthurium lilies. Green tissue paper can be used handy for making the leaves
of our homemade tree. It is time-consuming job as each rounded leaf had
to be cut and stacked up on the wire branch of the tree. This is the children’s
job and when completed, the paper tree was put into a pot of sand, and wads
of cotton wool placed on the sand and on the tree, to look like snow.
Then the tree decorated with a few glittering balls, which we held gently
like eggs, in case they broke. Some tinsel was then hung, and an angel placed
at the top. A string of Noma lights was strung on the tree and lit.
Make Ornaments from Clay
Make your own clay and let the kids´ creativity run wild by making
Christmas ornaments (Adult supervision required). In a saucepan mix 2 cups
of baking soda with 1 cup of cornstarch and 1 1/4 cups of cold water. Stir
constantly for 10-15 minutes until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes.
Remove to a plate for cooling, covering with a damp cloth. Now comes the
fun part! Roll with a rolling pin and cut out flat shapes, or let your kids
make 3 dimensional ornaments. To attaches pieces, just dampen and press
edges together. Allow the ornaments to air dry overnight. Paint with poster
or acrylic paints. When the paints dries, coat with clear nail polish to
protect the finished surface.
