The wildflower bloom began in early February, as much as two months sooner
than in normal years. As the early spring moves into the national park,
the southern part of Death Valley, much of which is below sea level, is
awash in a sea of flowers. The upper valley is a pointillist landscape of
opening buds. And as the season progresses, the plants farther up the surrounding
mountains will also start blossoming, extending the wildflower season into
May or even June.
Changeable Weather
Seasonal temperatures can be extreme. Desert winters are cool and summer
temperatures can reach 125°. May is usually very warm (80–90°),
and layered clothing is always advised. Wear sturdy footwear, especially
if you plan to hike to your photo destination. Wear a hat and use sun protection.
Carry plenty of water in your vehicle and while hiking one gallon minimum
per person per day is recommended.
